Languages

Six languages so far, learned the slow way. Now I'm learning Kyrgyz, and Georgian in Tbilisi, in public, counting every hour.

You're not bad at languages. You're bad at math.

Most learners think they've studied more than they have, and that fluency takes fewer hours than it does. So I built Nel-nela (ნელ-ნელა, Georgian for “little by little”): a free tracker that counts the real number.

  • Your real hoursIt counts the time you actually study, with a timer or by hand.
  • All five, balancedReading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar. It tells you when one is falling behind.
  • A date you can trustPlan your study slots and it tells you how long fluency will really take.

Notes from Tbilisi

The words I meet on the street, my real hours every month, and the stories in between: learning Georgian, written down as it happens. And if you're about to start a language yourself, there's a free 90-minute online workshop, Prepping to learn.
